Sault tops Alpena in Lynn Showcase

The Alpena News

SAULT STE. MARIE-The Alpena High School hockey team hung tough with Sault. Ste. Marie on Saturday, but couldn't muster more than a goal and lost to the Blue Devils on the second day of the Lynn Auto Parts Showcase.

Jared Plume scored for Alpena (7-7-1) in the first period and Jesse Boilore finished with 30 saves for the Wildcats.

The game marked a rematch of a Division 3 regional final from last season and Alpena coach Pete Doubek was proud of his team's effort despite the loss.

"Sault's a really good team obviously. They were the state runners-up last year and they didn't lose much. I was really happy with the kids' play," Doubek said. "The first and second periods we competed hard and a couple bounces here and there and the game could've gone the other way."

The teams were tied 1-1 after one period and Sault took the lead for good in the second period on a penalty shot before adding two more goals in the final frame.

Alpena will play two games against Central Algoma Secondary School in Canada this weekend.
