Rogers City, Alpena compete in Gillespie Invite tournament

It was a great day for the Rogers City and Alpena wrestling teams on Saturday in the Art Gillespie invite. Rogers City was first place with a perfect 5-0 result while Alpena was third at 3-2.

Grayling finished ahead of Alpena at 4-1 while Frankfort finished at 2-3, Oscoda at 1-4 and Mancelona at 0-5.

Alpena won its first meet against Mancelona 48-30. Daron Mathia (130) beat Roman McDaniels by pin while Austin Meicher (152) beat Riley Henderson by pin.

Default winners included Madison Vorhees (112), R.J. Centala (145), T.J. Tao (160), Dakota Patterson (171), Tom Szatkowski (189) and Austin Hawks (275).

No other Alpena results were reported at press time.

Rogers City (11-3) beat Frankfort 48-16 and Grayling 48-27. It also beat Alpena 57-9, Mancelona 66-6 and Oscoda 63-12.

Tommy Vogelheim (103) went 5-0 on the day, including a tight 9-7 win over Frankfort's Ben Tiesworth in the first round.

Noah Sobeck (130), Cameron Urban (135), Jacob Sobeck (145), Jack Ryan (152) and Andrew Selke (215) all went 5-0 for the day.

Urban picked up his 100th career win in the fourth match. He was named "Most Valuable Wrestler" for the tournament.

Other winners for Rogers city including Tristan Baller (112) and Jared LaFleche (171) at 4-1. Baller and LaFleche picked up pins in the first round against Frankfort.

Zach Myers (140) and Austin Bober (160) went 3-2 for Rogers City.

Alpena hosts Petoskey on Wednesday while Rogers City travels to St. Ignace.
