CHEBOYGAN Andy Marwede led Alpena (1-1) with 32 points and the Alpena boys basketball team won its first game of the season, defeating Cheboygan 85-62.
Luke Harrington led Cheboygan with 21 points.
In addition to Marwede, Tyler Pintar and Brad Styma scored 14 points each. Cody Tucker contributed 12 to the board. This win bumped the Wildcats to a 1-1 record for the season.
The first quarter score was 23-16 with Alpena ahead and set the tone for the rest of the game. Alpena led 49-33 at the half and 73-50 after three quarters.
"We had a really nice start. Tyler was 3-for-3 in the opening, and Marwede took over and dominated. With Styma and Tucker chipping in, it was a really good game," Alpena head coach John Pintar said.
Alpena's JV team also defeated Cheboygan, 62-37. Caleb Myers led with 14 points, Braeden Werth added eight, and Dylan Tucker added seven. The JV team is also 1-1.
Alpena plays Traverse City West on Friday.
Onaway 65, Joburg 55
ONAWAY Joe O'Bradovich led the Onaway boys basketball with 23 points and 12 rebounds to a 10-point win over Johannesburg-Lewiston on Tuesday night, 65-55.
The Cardinals had assistance from Carlos Bautista with 11 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Andrew Prow added 11 points.
Onaway led 14-10 after one quarter and 28-26 at halftime. With Joburg close behind, Onaway picked up its game in the third quarter for a 10-point lead that continued until the end.
"This is our first win of the year. The team played really well, and moved the ball around good as a team," Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said.
Onaway plays Gaylord St. Mary in Onaway on Thursday.
Posen 59, Hale 41
HALE-Nick Hincka topped his 1,000th career point and the Posen boys basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 59-41 win over Hale on Monday.
Hincka led Posen (4-0. 3-0 North Star League) with 32 points and Travis Sharpe added 22 points.
"It was one of the best games we've played all year," Posen coach Matt Ponik said. "We played 32 minutes of good, solid basketball offensively and defensively."
Posen led 41-13 at halftime.
The Vikings play at Alcona tonight.
Posen 61, Hale 10
HALE Posen earned its fifth straight win this season, and 52nd straight North Star League win on Tuesday night over Hale, topping the Eagles 61-10.
Korynn Hincka contributed 30 points to led Posen and Ashley Meyers added 11.
Posen led 20-2 after one quarter, 41-3 at halftime and 50-9 after three quarters.
"The girls went to the finish freely and often. It was a good game," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.
Posen's JV team also won against Hale 36-29. Lindsey Randall led Posen with 16 points.
Posen plays Rogers City at home next Friday.
Hillman 59, Whittemore-Prescott 13
HILLMAN Hillman had a 46-point win over Whittemore-Prescott on Tuesday, defeating the Cardinals 59-13.
Jensen Tchorzynski led the Tigers (1-2) with 21 points.
Hillman took an opportunity to get further ahead with each quarter. The Tigers led 16-2 after one quarter, 32-4 at halftime and 48-9 after three quarters.
"Defense led to easy baskets. We were able to press early on," Hillman coach John Kuzewski said.
Hillman hosts Wolverine on Friday.
Alcona 60, Mio 48
MIO-The Alcona girls basketball team earned its fourth win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Mio 60-48 in a North Star League contest.
Karina Cole paced Alcona (5-2, 3-1 NSL) with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Kendra Cole added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Megan Quick added eight points.
Alcona took a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and led 37-20 at halftime. The Tigers led 51-34 after three quarters.
"We had a very aggressive first half. Our posts played very well and complimented our outside shooting," Alcona coach Brad Cole said.
Jalen DeFlorio had a double-double for Mio, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Alcona's JV team beat Mio 37-31.
