Better ideas needed than cutting teachers’ pay

December 11, 2013
The Alpena News

I am writing to address an ongoing situation between the faculty and administrators at Alpena Public Schools in regards to settling a contract. It is my understanding that the teachers have offered several proposals that would save the district between 1.8 and 2.8 million dollars, yet the school board has not shown any interest in exploring these ideas. Apparently they would prefer to make the teachers accept a 10 percent pay cut rather than consider suggestions for restructuring and resizing that would not only help solve problems for today, but also for the future. This is not just a "teacher" issue because school problems have serious consequences for the health of our community. Even though it's true that the schools are in serious trouble due to decreased funding, APS teachers are still delivering a quality program to their students. How about discussing some creative and common sense ideas for saving the district money without punishing the teachers by cutting their pay? Citizens who are interested in this issue may want to attend the school board meeting on Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
