FAIRVIEW-The Fairview boys basketball team came up on the short end in it's season opener, falling to Oscoda 43-41 in a North Star League matchup on Monday.
The Eagles led 29-24 after three quarters, but Oscoda caught fire in the fourth quarter and outscored Fairview 19-12.
"It was just sloppy play on our part. It was poor coaching on Fairview's part. I didn't have them ready to play," Fairview coach Rick Ebert said.
Hudson Szubelak led Fairview (0-1) with 27 points and Austin Handrich added 12. Jared Little led Oscoda with 11 points and Alex Lamrock added 10.
Fairview plays at Mio on Thursday.
Rogers City 42
HALE-The Rogers City boys basketball team fell just short in its season-opener on Monday, losing to Hale 49-42.
Alex Hincka led the Hurons with 12 points, but fouled out in the fourth quarter. Rogers City cut the lead to two, 41-39 late, but couldn't climb all the way back.
Hale led 29-20 at halftime and 36-24 after three quarters.
Rogers City plays at Posen on Thursday.
Alpena finishes 13th in Howell
HOWELL-The Alpena wrestling team opened the 2013-14 season on Saturday at a tournament in Howell. The Wildcats finished 13th out of 17 teams.
RJ Centala went 3-0 for Alpena at 145 pounds and finished first in his weight class; Dakota Patterson (160) took third after going 3-1; Tom Szatkowski (171), Fabian Phillips (189) and Austin Hawks (285) each went 2-1.
The Wildcats host a quad meet on Wednesday starting at 6 p.m.
