ALPENA - The Alpena Volunteer Center at Alpena Community College has started its 35 annual Christmas Wish List to help supply hundreds of children specific gift requests. Most gifts are for basic needs such as clothing, household items and food, and each child is matched with a generous donor who agrees to fulfill the child's wish list.
"We have up to 500 or so kids, and include siblings and can even include parents in different cases," Kathleen Bruski, director of the Alpena Volunteer Center said. "We provide them with primary items through the list. There are donors of all levels involved and anyone interested can do from just one gift to a childs whole list, usually three items, and even a whole family."
Donors are matched with each child and can go through the wish lists and see what they would like to donate.
"It really becomes specialized and personalized. We even list children's favorite colors," Bruski said. "We do also take cash donations for those wishing to help contribute to the purchases on the list. The donations allow us to buy gift wrapping and tape and allow us to buy the gifts that aren't matched."
Volunteer Center phone lines are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to match donors with the wishes of a child. Gifts must be received the week of Dec. 2, through Dec. 5.
