Spa raising funds to help promote men’s health

ALPENA - Better Living Massage Center & Spa is teaming up with Alpena Regional Medical Center to raise awareness about men's health issues through the spa's "Man Up to Man-I-Cures" event taking place throughout November. A percentage of every "man up manicure" will go to ARMC's free men's health screenings at the cancer center.

"Proceeds from the event help offset the costs we incur by offering the free prostate screenings," ARMC Development Director Ann Diamond said. "The screening consists of a blood draw and physician exam, and those interested should pre-register with the cancer center by calling 356-8001 and mentioning the free exams.

"Better Living has decided to take this on, and we're very proud to be the recipients of this awesome initiative. It will certainly be beneficial to the community. Early detection is the key and this is a great step forward to make sure the men in our community are aware of men's health issues."

Better Living owner Rose Nowak was thinking of a way to give back to the community and raise awareness about men's health issues when she stumbled upon a national group called the Movember Foundation, whose motto was "changing the face of men's health." That gave her the idea to donate a portion of the proceeds from manicures and facials to support men's health. Nowak wanted to make an impact locally, so she and her staff decided to team up with ARMC and keep the funds raised during the event local.

"Most men don't like to talk about men's health," Nowak said. "We wanted to give them a little encouragement and bring awareness to men's health issues. A lot of issues can be prevented if they get a checked regularly."

Each manicure and facial is available to men and women who want to support the men in their lives. The staff at Better Living is working to encourage men to take advantage of the health screenings offered and take better care of themselves.

"If they are man enough to come in and get a manicure, they're man enough to go get screened," Nowak said. "Cancer and health issues don't just affect one sex, it affects everyone, so staying healthy and taking advantage of free screenings are an effective way to monitor your health."

This is the first year Better Living has been involved in the manicures and facials, and Nowak said the response already has been very good.

"It's something different and fun. Come in and get your hands soaked and scrubbed, nails filed and the ladies can have polish applied. It's the full service," nail technician Melissa Steiger said. "There is so much talk about women's health and not much about men's health. This is a way we can give back and help the community."

Better Living also is selling mustaches through November for $1 to support men's health.

Man Up to Man-I-Cures will be going on all month, and those interested can call Better Living Massage Center & Spa to make an appointment at 356-2221.

Free prostate screenings will be Nov. 23 from 8-11 a.m. and those interested in signing up can call 356-8001 to schedule an appointment.
