Local runners qualify for XC state finals

TRAVERSE CITY-Alpena freshmen runners Isaac Cross and Mitchell Day qualified for the Division 1 cross country state finals during a regional in Traverse City on Saturday.

Cross finished 10th, crossing the line in 17:24 and Day was right behind him in 11th at 17:25.

They'll compete on Saturday in the state finals at Michigan International Speedway at 3 p.m.

"They knew that their goal was going to be difficult to qualify as a team. They all needed to put together their best race on the same day at the same time. They ran their hearts out and I knew they were close," Alpena coach Joy Bullis said of her team. "With two individual freshmen qualifying for the D1 state meet, we look forward to a bright future in AHS cross country."

Traverse City Central's Kyle Dotterer won the regional in 16:35 and Alpena finished fifth with 112 points.

Other finishers for Alpena were: Eli Martin (24th, 17:58), RJ Centala (32nd, 18:18), Ryan Wirgau (35th, 18:27), Tellis Donajkowski (45th, 19:07) and Clay Jacobs (47th, 19:09).

The Alpena girls team finished 11th with 314 points behind first-place Rockford, which had 27 points. Rockford's Lauren Brasure took first place in 18:16.

"The girls competed first and they ran terrific. Definatately no personal records on a course like that, but I was very happy with their performances," Bullis said. "Definitely looking good for the girls for 2014. They are ending this season already pumped up for next year.

Leah Centala was Alpena's top finisher, crossing the line in 53rd at 22:58. She was followed by Alayna Nugent (63rd, 23:59); Jenna Talbot (64th, 24:08); Brooke Burrone (65th, 24:10); Lauren Heath (69th, 24:33); Hannah MacDonald (70th, 24:44) and Sarah Honeycutt (72nd, 25:06).

Onaway runners earn spots in D4 finals

CENTRAL LAKE-The Rogers City girls cross country team qualified for the Division 4 state finals after finishing third in a regional on Friday.

The Hurons finished with 84 points, just behind Johannesburg-Lewiston (82) and Inland Lakes (83).

The Division 4 finals will be held Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Freshman Emily Malocha was Rogers City's top finisher, taking fourth place in 21:01.

Other finishers for Rogers City were: Sami Bober (23rd, 23:19), Victoria Bullock (25th, 23:41), Rebecca Meyers (32nd, 42:12), Amber Wirgau (37th, 24:33), Alysse Hemple (39th, 24:39) and Amber Nowicki (42nd, 24:52).

Alcona's Megan Quick qualified for the state finals for the second year in a row. She finished 10th with a time of 21:50.5.

Other finishers for Alcona were Hannah Terpstra (24th, 23:22) and Lilly Manning (28th, 24:01).

Onaway finished ninth with 176 points. Finishers for the Cardinals were: Claire Bastian (22nd, 23:18), Signe Magnussen (26th, 23:49), Hannah Materna (54th, 25:56), Kate Olmsted (61st, 26:57), Tiffany Traynham (74th, 29:46), Erika Price (78th, 32:34) and Maddy Watts (79th, 32:37).

East Jordan's Kayla Keane won the regional in 19:09.

In the boys regional, Onaway junior Joe Traynham punched his ticket to the state finals with a fourth place finish in 17:30.7.

Pellston won the regional with 93 points. Fairview was sixth (134), Onaway was eighth (149) and Rogers City was ninth (205).

Rogers City's Jacob Sobeck narrowly missed a spot in the state finals after finishing 17th (19:02). Other finishers for the Hurons were: Dylan Lamb (50th, 21:13); Chris Tulgetska (51st, 21:18); Zach Beland (52nd, 21:23); Jacob Flemming (53rd, 21:25); Noah Sobeck (61st, 22:10) and Brendon Koss (67th, 22:48).

Other finishers for Onaway were: Morgan McLean (29th, 19:39), Seth Satchwell (39th, 20:43), Preston Badgero (41st, 20:45); Cameron Horn (47th, 21:02) and Joe O'Bradovich (55th, 21:26).

East Jordan's Josh Wojan won the regional in 16:42.7.

VOLLEYBALL

Onaway goes 2-2 at St. Louis Tourney

ST. LOUIS-The Onaway volleyball team went 2-2 at the St. Louis Tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinals defeated Saginaw Swan Valley (24-26, 25-21 and 15-8) and Corunna (25-22, 22-25 and 15-11) in pool play before falling to Beal City (22-25 and 15-25.)

Onaway advanced to the Gold bracket with a 2-1 pool play record, but lost in the first round to Freeland, 23-25, 25-18 and 13-15. The third set was tied at 10 before Freeland came away with the win.

"It was a good day and we had good competition," Onaway coach Steve Watson said.

Mariah Ehrke led Onaway with 55 kills and 49 digs and had a .305 attack percentage on the day; Devin Bristley had 22 kills, 45 digs and four aces; Taylor Ehrke had 81 assists, 22 digs and five aces; Lexi Szymoniak had 11 kills, 35 digs and eight blocks; Sara Fullerton had 11 kills and 22 digs and Morganne Badgero added 16 digs.

Onaway plays at Cedarville today.
