TRAVERSE?CITY-The AHS boys and girls cross country team completed in the Big North Conference final on Tuesday. Weather conditions were chilly and rainy.

There were three races for both teams. Each runner scored based on placement in these races.

The Alpena boys came in third out of seven teams with 100 points. Central lead with 28 points while West had 49.

Behind Alpena was Petoskey with 117 points, followed by Cadillac with 118, Gaylord with 122 and Ogemaw with 189.

"This is the highest place for the boys team since I have been in Alpena. The boys were disappointed because they expect more of themselves. But in reality this is a big move for Alpena," Alpena coach Joy Bullis said.

Mitchell Day finished first for the boys with a time of 17:20 with Elisha Martin chasing his heals for a season best time of 17:28. Issac Cross was next (18:03) followed by Tellis Donajkowski (18:17) and RJ Centala (18:42). John Smith came in with a time of 18:44 followed closely by Clay Jacobs (18:46).

Top JV boys runners included Ryan Wirgau (18:16) and Ben Diamond with a season best 18:32.

"These boys are all so close in times that I am finding it very difficult choosing a regional varsity team. What a fantastic and horrible problem to have," Bullis said.

The Alpena girls were seventh out of seven with 192 points. TC Central won with 17 points, followed by West with 65, Cadillac with 90, Gaylord with 100, Petoskey with 113 and Ogemaw with 173.

The girls placed sixth in the first two races and seventh in the last.

"We were missing quite a few girls due to physical issues and personal issues, but the girls that were able to run did a fantastic job. Out of 12 girls, nine ran a season best," Bullis said.

Leah Centala was the top finisher for Alpena with a season best 22:33. Hannah MacDonald came in behind Centala with a season best 23:20, followed closely by Jenna Talbot (season best 23:32).

Brooke Burrone (23:39) finished behind Talbot. Lauren Heath was next, with a season best time of 24:21, followed by Sarah Honeycutt (season best 24:48).

Phoebe Wojciechowski finished with a season best time of 25:31.

Ashley Krawzcak, Etta Kowalewsky and Allison Bellinir finished with season best times for the JV team.

The Alpena XC teams travel to Traverse City on Saturday, October 26th for their regional meet.
