ALPENA -The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center Family Support group assists family member in many ways after a loved one has been deployed. Its contributions can be as simple as a phone call to say hello, to helping the family get through financial difficulties.
To boost the amount of money in the CRTC-Family Support Fund, the base and Alpena County Regional Airport are offering a new experience for local runners and individuals wishing to take an evening walk.
The event, which is called the Lighted Runway Fun Run/Walk, will take place Saturday and begin at 6 p.m. The airport will light the runway with its landing lights and people can walk, run or jog the runway, which is 9,001 feet long. Support group member Amber Schuldt said a one-way jaunt down the runway will be set at 7,950 feet and one complete circuit is 15,900 feet. Schuldt said there are many ways the support group helps military families.
"When a family has a military deploy, we stay in touch with them and are organized to help them," Schuldt said. "Some may need help with simple things like lawn care, while others may need help financially or with counseling. Some could have a furnace go out and need to be replaced. We can provide the contacts and means to get it fixed or replaced."
Schuldt said some of the support boosts the family members emotionally if the are struggling to come to grips with a military member being deployed. She said simple gestures can go a long way in helping.
"We will call and just say hello and ask how things are going and see if they need anything," Schuldt said. "What we offer is just as much emotional support as it is financial. Sometimes just a phone call to let them know you were thinking about them can help them."
Schuldt said Airport Manager Billi McRoberts was supportive of the idea of having the fundrasing event take place under the hue of the lights of the runway. She said the event will begin at the airport terminal and a limited number of T-shirts commemorating the event will be available. After the participants complete their lap, there will be water free of charge.
The cost of the event is $20 and registration forms are available at Frank's Key and Lock, the Bay Athletic Club and North Country Gifts. People can register from 4:30-5:30 p.m. the day of the event for $25.
