PETOSKEY-The Alpena boys tennis team competed in the Big North Conference finals in Petoskey on Tuesday. Alpena tied with Cadillac for 4th place. They trailed Petoskey by two points and Traverse City West by four.
Number one singles Abram Purol placed third, number two singles Andre Gagnon placed third, number three singles Aaron Decaire placed second and number four singles player Greg Kucharek placed fourth.
Number one doubles Noah Barney-Steinke and Samyak Harsh placed third. Number two doubles Wyatt Hanna and Ben Goren placed fourth. Number three doubles John Chen and David Resnick placed fifth as did number four doubles Patrick Connon and Cameron Decaire.
Alpena competes at regional on Thursday in Flushing.
Rogers City 3, Posen 0
ROGERS CITY-The Rogers City Hurons faced North Star League rivals Posen on Tuesday and swept the Vikings 25-22, 25-14 and 25-18 to stay undefeated in the North Star.
"That's our toughest competition in the league so far. They had some nice blocks against us with Korynn Hincka, but we had some nice digs and our defense played really well tonight," Rogers City coach Jackie Quaine said.
Rogers City (14-7-1, 5-1 NSL) was led offensively by Cassidy Purgiel with 10 kills. Jenna Tulgetske contributed nine kills and three blocks. Sarah Meredith had five kills while Courtney Streich had four aces. Cassie Brege set up 33 assists.
Defensively, Rogers City was led by Megan Quaine with 17 digs.
"I just couldn't get the girls to communicate enough, to up their intensity. Rogers City communicated really well tonight and it helped get them the win," Posen head coach Michelle Mulka said.
Hincka led Posen (8-4, 4-4 NSL) offensively with five kills. She also picked up three blocks. Mercedes Kowalski set up her team with four assists. Kayla Lenard had 10 digs.
Rogers City travels to Alcona on Thursday while Posen hosts Hillman in a "Pink Out" game, to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
Alcona 3, Whittemore-Prescott 0
LINCOLN-The Alcona volleyball team (6-2, 5-2 NSL) picked up a conference win against Whittemore-Prescott on Tuesday with a three game sweep. They won 25-14, 25-9 and 25-11.
"We took control and early and the girls never let down," Alcona coach Kristi Arnold said.
Karina Cole led offensively with 12 kills. Sierra Forsythe and Sydney Pierce both had six aces. Katelyn Nelson set up nine assists for her team.
Cole and Sam Zerbst each picked up four digs.
Alcona hosts Rogers City on Thursday.
Alcona 5, Standish 1
LINCOLN-The Alcona soccer team hosted Standish on Tuesday and picked up a 5-1 win. It led 3-0 at the half and faced 29 shots on the goal, but were able to hold off all but one.
Trenton LaVergne picked up two goals and assist. Jason Steiner had two goals and two assists. Brendan Nelson picked up a single goal for the tigers.
Goal keep Chase Matthews had 10 saves.
Alcona faces Fairview on Thursday for their last game in the North Star League.
