Two weeks from today the Redneck Rush takes place at the Alpena County Fairgrounds.
The event, which is a cross between an endurance run, obstacle course and comedy club, is a fundraiser for the Wings over Alpena 2014 air show.
Events such as this have become quite popular around the country. A number of similar runs take place across Michigan each year, but this is the first of its kind for Northeast Michigan that we are aware of.
And, this isn't just an event for cross country runners as spectators also can get in the fun. Where else, for example, can spectators throw water balloons at participants? Well, that is exactly what can happen with the Redneck Rush rolls into town.
Because this is a fundraiser, organizers are hoping for strong participation from local residents, as well as out-of-town friends. Wings over Alpena 2014 plans are being finalized for next summer, and money raised from this race will help offset costs for the very popular air show.
We think the Redneck Rush sounds like a hoot. Hopefully, so will others and this year's race can turn into an annual celebration.
