The Alpena boys tennis team took another step in the right direction on Tuesday.

Though the Wildcats lost to Petoskey 5-3, they won three out of four singles flights and played the Northmen closer than in years past.

"Losing 5-3 to Petoskey is good. Usually we lose 8-0 or win one flight," Alpena tennis coach Charlie Giordano said. "Taking three flights is a big accomplishment and says a lot about this team.

Alpena’s Abram Purol returns a shot against his Petoskey opponent on Tuesday at Thunder Bay Junior High School. Purol won his match 6-3, 7-5.

Abram Purol won for Alpena at No. 1 singles (6-3, 7-5) and Aaron DeCaire and Greg Kucharek followed with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. DeCaire won 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and Kucharek won 6-1, 6-2.

"They did really well. They did a nice job of keeping the ball in play and forcing the other players to make mistakes," Giordano said of his singles players. "They put in a lot of work in the offseason and instead of trying to hit winners, they're able to change their games and force other players to make mistakes which is fun to watch."

No. 2 singles Andre Gagnon lost 5-7, 1-6.

Alpena didn't fare as well in its doubles flights. No. 1 doubles Noah Barney-Steinke and Samyak Harsh lost 6-2, 2-6, 2-6; No. 2 doubles Wyatt Hanna and Ben Goren lost 2-6, 3-6; No. 3 doubles John Chen and David Resnick lost 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 and No. 4 doubles Patrick Connon and Cameron DeCaire lost 2-6, 2-6.

Alpena plays Bay City Central at Delta today at 4 p.m.
