New postmaster in Alpena

ALPENA - The Alpena office of the United States Postal Service has a new postmaster.

Linda Kruger was sworn in as postmaster on Friday afternoon by Manager of Post Office Operations Linda Woods. The ceremony consisted of Kruger being sworn in by oath to her new position, and was special to Kruger not only for the position, but also because her daughter held the bible on which she made her oath.

"I started in 1994 as an RCA, which is a rural carrier sub, and about three years later I made rural carrier. I did that for about 13 years," Krueger said. "Then I was a 204 B in Grand Rapids, which is an acting supervisor, and I transferred to Grayling as a supervisor for three years and then to Alpena. This is my first postmaster position."

As postmaster, Kruger ensures the office is running smoothly, provides customer service, oversees general operations and makes sure everything is working properly.

"This is exciting," Kruger said. "The whole ceremony is really exciting and to have my family and the employees here to share it with me is very nice."

The bible used to swear her into office was a gift from her daughter and son, which made the ceremony even more special to Kruger.

"It's one of those milestones in life," she said. "Especially with the bible being a gift in 2001, to be able to use that as a swearing in for me as postmaster was very special."

Woods said she is confident Kruger will be a good postmaster. She also said postmasters used to be political appointees and that was where she thought the ceremony of being sworn in under oath originated.

"The swearing in is an official ceremony that introduces them to the community," Woods said. "There is no other leader in the city that touches every home every day like she does through her leadership with the carriers that work out of here. It's an important community ceremony."

Kruger is only the second woman to be sworn in as postmaster in Alpena since 1857. The first female postmaster in Alpena was Joyce Bender in 1993, and now, 10 years later, Kruger will lead the office.

"She is very dedicated to give the very best service to this community," Woods said of Kruger. "She is committed to keep a positive image going for the postal service."
