MARQUETTE-Former Alpena High School linebacker and Northern Michigan University senior Morgan Stenz was voted one of four team captains by his Wildcat teammates for the 2013 season. Stenz is a senior at NMU and is majoring in emotional impairment and secondary education.
"These four guys are great leaders for us," NMU football coach Chris Ostrowsky told the Marquette Mining Journal. "They all work very hard and push their teammates to do the same. I know I can count on all four to help out the coaching staff."
Stenz lettered twice for AHS as a varsity quarterback and linebacker under former coach Jack Gebauer. He was named team and offensive MVP. He was also a two-time first team all-conference player and a two-time first team all-area.
Morgan Stenz, seen here in a 2008 AHS football game at quarterback, was named one of four senior team captains for the Northern Michigan University football team. Stenz is one of NMU’s top linebackers, picking up 82 tackles in 2012.
Stenz was a multi-sport athlete, making a name for himself as an all-state, all-conference and all-area pole vaulter on the AHS track team. He also wrestled under brother Jake Stenz as a four-time all-conference selection, with a record of 120-15.
Although Stenz was redshirted as a freshman for the NMU team in 2009, he lettered in 2010, playing five games. He picked up 10 tackles and recovered a fumble, and was named to the GLIAC all-academic team from 2010-12.
Stenz earned a second letter in 2011 and a third in 2012, playing in all 11 games each season. He was named "Most Improved Defensive Player" in 2011, and picked up 42 total tackles.
In 2012, he was second leading tackler for his team, with a total of 82 tackles. 14 of his tackles were for a loss. His experience as a senior could make him a key defensive player and team captain for the NMU Wildcats this year.
Stenz is the son of Joe and Kim Stenz of Alpena, and also does well in his studies, regularly making it to the Dean's List. His season as a team captain begins September 14th in the Superior Dome against Findlay.
