Walgreens, APS team up on school supplies

August 26, 2013

ALPENA - Walgreens is working with Alpena Public Schools to help provide school supplies to children in need in the district. The program is part of Operation Kid Equip, which works along with the McKinney Vento Act and involves a number of businesses with donation boxes for their purchased merchandise, with 100 percent of the supplies going to kids in need.

According to its website www.operationkidequip.org aims to help give students in need the opportunity to learn.

"It's an additional help," Vicki Denstaedt, homeless services advocate for Alpena Public Schools, said. "The backpacks we order for students don't suffice. People can purchase backpacks and supplies through Walgreens and drop them off in the distribution area at the store. All the donations go to the homeless students in Alpena Public Schools."

This isn't the first year Walgreens has had a donation box for school supplies, but it is the first time Denstaedt has been involved in the unique donation program. Last year, APS helped to educate about 100 homeless students. This year the donation box will help provide school supplies for students struggling with homelessness and a lack of necessary items to actively participate in classes.

"Donations can be big or small, and Walgreens has all the school supplies, with some on clearance," Denstaedt said. "Older students need pocket folders, pencils, spiral notebooks and colored pencils, just everyday supplies students need to succeed. Elementary students need crayons, glue sticks, simple reading books, rulers, notebooks, filler paper, pencils and typical school supplies."

The donation box will be at Walgreens on the corner of M-32 and S. Bagley Street until Saturday.
