Alpena volleyball opens season in Alma

ALMA-The Alpena High School volleyball team opened their 2013 season at the Alma Invitational. The Wildcats started the Invitational with a match against the host Alma High School. Alpena came back from a 17-24 point deficit in the first game to beat Alma 29-27 and 25-12 in the second game.

Alpena lost the second match in pool play to Dewitt 10-25 and 15-25 but won the last match against Pinconning 22-25, 25-15 and 15-10.

Alpena finished second in their pool which placed them in the Gold Division for the playoffs.

Alpena faced last year's class B state champions, Lakewood High School, in the first round of the Gold Division. The Wildcats lost 13-25 and 14-25.

The leaders for the Alpena Volleyball team were Emma Strong with 20 kills, Logan Myers with 14 kills and 21 digs, Taylor Genschaw with 7 kills and 20 digs, and Isabelle O'Neil added 23 defensive digs.

Onaway, winners

Pellston Primary

PELLSTON-The Onaway volleyball team opened up their season on Saturday by going 8-0 at the Pellston?Primary, a 12 team tournament that coach Steve Watson believes Onaway has never won.

"In my 10 years of coaching, we've never won that tournament," he said.

Onaway started the day by beating Central Lake 25-11 and 25-13. They then beat Bay City?All-Saints 25-14 and 25-13.

Next, they beat Charlevoix 25-22 and 25-18. The Cardinals then took out host Pellston 27-25 and 25-16.

Onaways 25-16 and 25-19 win over?Harbor Springs put them at the number one seed in their playoff group.

They beat East Jordan 25-10 and 25-11 in the quarterfinals. They faced Kingsley in the semis and beat them 25-22 and 25-16.

The Cardinals faced Cheboygan in the finals, and swept them 25-16 and 25-14.

Three Onaway players made the All-Tournament team. No other team in the tournament had more than one player.

Mariah Ehrke had an amazing night with 70 kills, an attack percentage of 0.281, 11 aces and 77 digs.

Devin Bristley also made the tournament team. She had 41 kills, an attack percentage of 0.241, 20 aces and 37 digs.

Lexi Szymoniak was the last Onaway player on the tournament team. She had 27 kills, 10 aces, 50 digs and five blocks.

Taylor?Ehrke, Mariah's freshman sister had 141 assists, seven kills, 29 digs and 10 aces.

Sarah Fullerton had 18 kills, 10 aces, 31 digs and eight blocks.

Onaway travels to Cadillac on Thursday to play in an all day tournament.
