Alpena's worst kept secret became official this week with public recognition that Meijer has submitted site plans to Alpena Township officials for a 20.34 acre store, parking lot and gas station/convenience store.
The plan will appear before the township's planning and zoning committee Sept. 9. From there, depending on what occurs, it will end up back before the entire township board for approval.
According to Township Supervisor Marie Twite, concerns about traffic flow in and out of the property - which will be located across M-32 from Walmart - are addressed in the site plan. She also confirmed discussions regarding that issue continue to be held.
In our minds that is a legitimate concern that needs satisfactorily resolved, but we're confident it will be before the process moves too far along. Certainly the store will generate more traffic in the M-32 and Bagley Street area and with the number of accidents in that corridor already an issue, entrance and exit from the new store has to be examined closely.
In the meantime Northeast Michigan residents can increase their level of excitement in anticipation of new shopping opportunities on the horizon. For a region where jobs can be hard to come by, the announcement was welcome news.
