The recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings about same-sex marriage are part of a national trend toward proving equal rights for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Sadly though, Michigan is in the dark ages on this issue. Our state constitution, which should protect rights, instead takes away rights for same-sex couples. Even worse, in Michigan a person can be fired from their job simply based on sexual orientation. One ray of hope is that there will be a marriage equality festival in Harrisville on Saturday, August 17 with a nationally known keynote speaker at 1:30 pm. I hope people will attend to learn more about the issue and show their support for LGBT persons. I'm sure there will be signs in Harrisville pointing the way to the event.
