Last Friday our family took a little bike ride down to the band shell to check out the live music. As I rode up I observed the usual festivities and enjoyed the music, though not my style it was still nice to hear live music and see so many people relaxing by the bay. Then I began to notice something that I usually notice at large Alpena gatherings and it is really starting to disturb me. A large majority of people young and old in this town are either obese or morbidly obese. Now this is nothing new but what caught my attention this time was the number of young adults and teens that are morbidly obese. And they really don't seem to care. Do they not realize that they are setting themselves up for a life time of health issues? Surely they are becoming insulin resistant which will lead to diabetes and a whole host of other issues. Are they just not aware or don't care? Clearly no one has instilled in them the habits of healthy living, no one has taught them that what you eat and what you do or don't do with your body matters. I know our schools do not teach healthy eating habits by example of the donut drive fund raisers and poor lunch choices, sure they give it lip service but no good examples are set. Michigan is one of the most obese states in the nation and surely Alpena must be one of the worst in the state.
