Alcona to raffle off patrol car

June 20, 2013
Betsy Lehndorff - News Staff Writer , The Alpena News

HARRISVILLE The Alcona County Sheriff's Office is auctioning off a white 2008 Chevy Impala it has retired from its fleet. Earlier this week, the county commissioners set a minimum bid of $1,200 for the front-wheel drive sedan.

County Clerk Patty Truman said she will accept sealed bids until 4 p.m., July 12, at her office and has a bid form available. Or potential buyers can mail in their sealed bids, writing their name, address, phone number and bid amount down on a sheet of paper.

The clerk's office is in the courthouse at 106 Fifth St., Harrisville, 48740.

The department strips the vehicle of law enforcement equipment and markings, Undersheriff Matthew Perkins said. A set of wiggling headlights also has been replaced with conventional lamps. But the vehicle still retains two spotlights.

The car has 169,000 miles on it and has had routine maintenance done, he said. It is equipped with a large V-6 engine, and snow tires, and is sold as is.

Potential buyers cannot test drive the vehicle, but they can look at it in the parking lot on the north side of the courthouse.

Perkins said in the past a grandfather has purchased patrol cars, cleaned them up and given them to his grandchildren.
