NORTH ALLIS TOWNSHIP - Two all-terrain vehicle riders were hospitalized after crashing into a tree Saturday evening, according to a press release from the Presque Isle County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responed to the accident on Bonz Beach Highway, just west of M-211, at around 8:20 p.m, according to the release. They found that a 36-year-old male driver had lost control of his three-wheeler and crashed into a tree, ejecting both him and his 26-year-old female passenger. She fled the scene, and he was left unconscious. Both were wearing helmets. Onaway Ambulance took the driver to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition as of Sunday. The passenger was found the next day with minor injuries, and she was taken to McLaren Cheboygan Hospital.
After doing an initial investigation, deputies believe speed to be a factor in the crash, but not alcohol, according to the release. The accident remains under investigation.
