ALPENA - The Alpena Township Board of Trustees approved spending $3,896 on repairs to the Alpena Township North Fire Department at its meeting on Monday. Repairs to the building include a new ceiling in the bathroom with new lights and a fan, new drywall, primer, two finish coats of paint, and a new kitchen light.

The board will be looking at infrared light options to reduce steam in the bathroom and may need to replace the water heater.

"The pipes are leaking," Supervisor Marie Twite said. "We did plug money into the budget to do this."

Twite said the bathrooms were built in 1963 and haven't been updated since, aside from being painted.

"That bathroom has been the same for 50 years," she said. "It's a pretty old style and we want to make it a little more modern."

Robert E. Kaczorowski will be the general contractor for the repairs.

The board also looked at the purchase of a new automated external defibrillator for the new ambulance at a cost of either $832 to fix the current AED or $1,295 to purchase a new one. The vote was unanimous to purchase a new AED to be put into the new rig.

Other approved expenditures were the purchase of five new flathead axes for $41 each with a total cost of $205 and a new pipe pole for engine number three for $63.

At the beginning of the meeting, the board recognized four new firefighter one and firefighter two program certified firefighters. Josh McAlpine, Tiffany Roberts, Kevin MacArthur, and Dave Risteau completed the classes through the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center and according to the State of Michigan requirements.

"These new firefighters have successfully completed the requirements for firefighter one and firefighter two," Twite said. "We want to welcome you to our department and thank you very much for joining us."

The new firefighters were presented with certificates and their arches for completing the course with congratulations from the members of the board.
