ALPENA - The Alpena Downtown Development Authority will be issuing its first-ever commuter challenge from June 10-16. The challenge is focused on businesses downtown, but anyone is welcome to participate. The commuter challenge is a competition between businesses for the most trips logged commuting to and from work by not driving individually. It is free to participate and there will be prizes awarded for the top three businesses with the most trips logged.
"We're trying to encourage people in the community to get outside and involved in healthy activities," Sarah Adcock, Huron Pines AmeriCorps education and outreach specialist at the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, said. "The town I lived in downstate had a commuter challenge and I know how much fun it is and how exciting it is to participate in. I wanted to bring it to Alpena, so we decided to do it in June and hope for good weather."
Downtown business will be offering discounts and a mountain bike from Cobblestone Cyclery will be up for grabs for the area's super commuter. First place prize for the business with the most commuter miles wins a tour with Alpena Shipwreck Tours on the glass-bottom boat and second place business wins a ticket to the State Theater. The third place prize is a coupon for Soaps and Such.
"I will be monitoring the Facebook page and compiling a spreadsheet to keep track of the trips logged for each business," Adcock said. "We hope to let the winners know the next week."
Participants can log their commutes on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AlpenaDDACommuter Challenge with their business name and their commute miles. You also can email your log to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 356-8805 ext. 21 for any questions or to get your business involved.
The cutoff day to log commutes is June 19.
