Alpena girls track second in Big North tourney

TRAVERSE CITY The Alpena girls track team finished second at the Big North Conference championship meet on Wednesday, while the boys team finished third.

Traverse City Central won the girls meets with 203.5 points while Alpena had 140. TC West came in third with 117.5 followed by Gaylord with 45, Petoskey with 39, Cadillac with 35 and Ogemaw-Heights with 28.

Christina Kollien picked up first place finishes in the 100 hurdles (15.85) and the 300 hurdles (49.00). Kollien also picked up second in the 100 dash (13.38). Jenna Talbot picked up fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.76).

Emily Ferguson picked up a gold medal in discuss (10' 1/2") while Sarah Swider picked up first in the high jump (4'10"). Swider also snagged second in the long jump (16'6.5")

Emily Duncan picked up a first place finish in the 400 dash (1:01), a fourth in the 100 dash (13.40) and a seventh place finish in the 200 dash (28.61). Duncan also tied Taylor Genschaw for third in the long jump (15'9").

Other individual medals included a third place finish for Elaine Lowe in the 3,200 run (11:37). She also picked up fifth in the 1,600 run (5:30). Victoria Guzman was fourth in the pole fault (8'6") while Kircey Hauser was eighth in the shot put (27' 6 1/2"). Kelsey Lewis picked up a second place finish in the 800 run (2:25) while Amanda Dort picked up fourth (2:29).

Relay medals inclued a fourth place finish (54.41) for the 400 relay team (Kollien, Guzman, Genschaw, and Kristie McNeil). The 800 relay team (McNeil, Genschaw, Niese Wilke and Racheal McDonald) snagged fifth (1:57). The 1,600 team (Lewis, Dort, McDonald and Renee Vredenburg) picked up fourth (4:26) while the 3,200 team (Lewis, McDonald, Dort and Mikayla Oliver) picked up second (10:24).

"They had an awesome day, lots of personal best times today. They really made TC West sweat tonight and I couldn't be any happier," girls coach Collin Riffert said.

In the boys meet, Traverse City Central was first with 211 points, TC West was second with 111, Alpena was third with 110, Cadillac was next with 75 points, Petoskey had 52, Gaylord 40 and Ogemaw-Heights 7.

"There was a steady rain all day but the kids showed up to compete and they got the job done. They did extremely well," boys coach Bob Bennett said.

Josh Bell picked up Alpena's only individual first place win in the 300 hurdles (41.46) while Brenden Cordes snagged third (42.30). Cordes also picked up a third place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.08).

The 800 relay team (Eliot Zarins, Kaleb Smith, Cordes, Drew Shields) picked up Alpena's only other first place finish for the night (1:33).

Ashton Dever picked up a third place finish in the 100 dash (11.53) and a third in the 200 dash (23.81). Zarins was sixth in the 100 dash (11.72).

Other top finishers for Alpena included a bronze for Shields in the 400 dash (51.79). R.J. Centala picked up fifth in the 800 run (2:07). Jacob Benson had sixth in the 1,600 run (4:54) while Ethan Crowell had third in the 3,200 run (10:04). The 400 relay team (Zarins, Shields, Aaron Keyes and Brett LeTourneau) came in fourth (47.08). The 1,600 relay team (Smith, LeTourneau, Shields, Dever) also came in fourth (3:38) while the 3,200 relay team (Centala, Crowell, Benson and Mustapha Zorgati) came in third (8:35).

Field event winners included J.D Niergarth's third place high jump finish (5'10"). Evan Frank tied for second in the pole vault (12'0") while Dylan Goike picked up fifth (11'6"). Dever picked up bronze in the long jump (19'10 3/4") while Cordes snagged fourth (19'3 1/2"). Jordan Ferguson picked up sixth in the shot put (43'2 1/2").
