ATLANTA - The Montmorency-Oscoda-Alpena Solid Waste Management Authority added hours to the landfill's operations in order to accommodate haulers who may have loads that need to be dropped off on Fridays.
During its meeting on Friday the landfill board voted 6-0 to extend Friday hours from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. For the last three years the landfill would close at 2 p.m. during the summer months. At times s who were running late or traveling a significant distance showed up after the facility has closed from time to time and would have to take the trucks back home and return to the landfill on Friday morning to empty.
Administrator Sandy Cunningham said several of the commissioners had been contacted by hauling companies that requested the hours be extended. She said on Friday's the landfill's business drops significantly after 2 p.m. and only about 40 loads cross the scale after that time for the entire year. The board decided it is better to remain open an extra two hours to accommodate the haulers.
"It seems like everyone is used to the schedule we have now, but it seems like every summer we have complaints about the two o'clock closing time, Cunningham said. "It is difficult for them to get here at the two-o'clock closing and actually we need them here by 1:30 p.m. and they are having difficulties being able to do that."
Cunningham said there will be an impact to the budget and on the machines that are used at the landfill.
"This will cause the equipment to work two extra hours and we'll have to pay three people to be here," Cunningham said. "We need to have two in the back and one up front in the office to handle what needs to be done. We'll stagger the schedule so it won't be as costly and pay as much overtime."
Once the new schedule takes effect it will remain in place until the winter hours begin after the holidays. During the winter months the landfill is open from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. from Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-12 p.m..
