Alpena baseball sweeps Gaylord

GAYLORD-The Alpena baseball team hit hard against Gaylord on Tuesday, sweeping the Blue Devils in a doubleheader 11-3 and 15-0.

Tim Atkinson was the winning pitcher in the first game. He pitched three innings. He gave up two hits and struck out six. Nick Skiba pitched the three innings and struck out four. Andy Marwede came in to close the seventh and struck out one.

Gaylord was only able to pick up four hits against Alpena's strong pitching attack.

Tyler Pintar led offensively with two hits and three RBIs. Atkinson and Mitch Skiba both picked up two hits.

Alpena mercied Gaylord in the second game in four innings. Marwede pitched all four, striking out six and giving up only one hit and one walk.

Dylan Glennie led Alpena with three hits and four RBIs. Guilio Fantasia picked up two hits and four RBIs. Atkinson and Pintar picked up two hits a piece.

Alpena is now 13-2 and 7-1 in the Big North. The Wildcats play in the Saginaw Heritage Tournament on Saturday.

Oscoda 18-9, Hale 2-3

OSCODA-The Hale baseball team struggled against Oscoda on Tuesday, losing 18-2 and 9-3.

Travis Pript was the losing pitcher in the three-inning mercy game.

Travis Fante picked up a single and stole a base to open up a scoring opportunity. Billy Culhane stole two bases to score and drive in a run.

Oscoda slowed down a bit in the second game. Kaydon Reimer was Hale's losing pitcher, giving up four runs, five hits, three walks and striking out four .

Reimer also picked up two hits, scored one run and had two stolen bases. Pript picked up one hit and an RBI while Fante picked up an RBI. Ryan Richardson picked up a hit.

Hale is now 3-15 overall and 3-5 in the North Star League. The Eagles play again in the Alcona Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

Hale 4-8, Posen 2-2

HALE-Posen baseball dropped two against Hale on Monday, 4-2 and 8-2.

Brandon Dietz pitched the first game and gave up three hits, three earned runs, three walks and seven strikeouts. Travis Sharpe went 3-for-3 including a double.

Kelsey Chirvid of Hale picked up a no-hitter in the second game. Eighth grader Darren Dubie pitched one inning and picked up two hits, four runs, three walks and two hits. Dietz came in for three innings, gave up three walks and struck out four. Eighth grader Nathan Mulka made his pitching debut as well.

Posen is now 3-7 overall and 2-7 in the North Star League. The Vikings host the Wozniak Invitational on Saturday. They play Superior Central at 10 a.m. while Oscoda plays Superior Central at noon. Posen then plays Oscoda at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Alpena 15-13,

Gaylord 5-3

GAYLORD-The Alpena softball team continued a solid winning streak with a two-game sweep of Gaylord on Tuesday, winning 15-5 in the first game and 13-3 in the second.

Alex Peters was the winning pitcher for the first game. She pitched five innings in the mercy win and struck out eight, walked two and gave up six hits. Peters also picked up three hits including two doubles.

Brenna Bourdage had a big day picking up three hits, all doubles. Logan Myers had a great day as well, picking up two hits including a triple. Abby MacArthur hit two singles.

Corinn Gehrke pitched the second game for Alpena. She struck out six and gave up three walks in six innings.

Myers led Alpena with three hits including a double. Jenna VanDusen hit two doubles while Bourdage and Elise Leeck both had two hits.

Leeck started the season on JV but has become an asset on the varsity team since her move up.

"We ran up against some nice competition down state last weekend and we had a nice week last week, winning all four conference games. We've played a lot of ball and a lot of innings and it's really starting to show," Alpena coach Paul Marwede said.

Alpena is now 11-6 overall and goes to 7-0 in the Big North. The Wildcats host Escanaba on Friday at 3 p.m. and play Saturday in the Flint Kearsley Invitational.

The Alpena JV girls had a big night at home against Gaylord, winning 15-0 in the first game and 26-4 in the second. Both games went three innings.

Lauren Heath was the winning pitcher in the first game. She faced 11 batters and gave up two hits. Emily Edmonds picked up a hit while Kelsey Udell had a double.

Madison Amlotte pitched for Alpena in the second game, fanning three batters. She allowed one walk and two hits. Gaylord faced 19 Alpena batters in the first inning as the Blue Devils struggled on the mound.

Alexis Smith went 4-for-5 and picked up one triple. Jordan Modrzynski went 2-for-5 and got a double.

The Wildcats JV team is now 13-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big North. They play Saturday in the Pinconning Invitational.

Rogers City 15-11, Rudyard 0-0

RUDYARD-The Rogers City softball team traveled to Rudyard on Tuesday and outscored the Bulldogs 26-0 in a two game sweep.

Nikki Radke and Alexa Quaine both pitched two innings in the first game and gave up only one hit total.

Courtney Streich went 4-for-4 and picked up a double. Sarah Meredith had three hits including a double. Logan Fleming picked up two singles while Brooklyn Idalski, Morgan Hall and Cassie Brege all hit a double. Brenna Hincka and Nikki LaLonde both picked up a hit.

Idalski and Radke pitched for a total of five innings in the second and gave up three hits.

Rebecca Meredith grabbed two hits as did Streich. Streich went 6-for-6 on the day. Fleming picked up a double while Hincka, Quaine and Rachel Chojnacki all hit singles.

Rogers City is now 10-3 overall and 2-0 in the Straits Area Conference. The Hurons host Cheboygan on Friday.

Onaway 6-12, Posen 1-1

ONAWAY-The Posen softball team took a pair of tough losses against Onaway on Tuesday, losing 6-1 loss in the first game and a 12-1 loss in the second.

The first loss was influenced by the loss of Ashley Meyers in the second inning after she rolled her ankle during her warm up pitches.

Meyers picked up two strike outs in her one inning. Taylor Chojnacki came in for the rest of the game and gave up six runs, all unearned. She also gave up four hits, three walks while striking out seven.

"Taylor pitched a great game tonight," Posen coach Glenn Budnick said.

Emily Estep pitched seven innings for Onaway, giving one run, one walk, four hits and seven strikeouts.

Estep went 1-for-2 and picked up an RBI. Lexi Szymoniak went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Devin Bristley picked up a double.

Danielle Rhode, Meyers and Amy Buczkowski all picked up a hit for Posen while Anna Couture picked up a double.

Chojnacki pitched in the second game, five-inning mercy loss. She gave up seven hits and seven walks.

Onaway was helped out by a seven-run fourth inning, including a grand slam.

Estep pitched five innings, giving up only four hits and striking out six. She went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a solo home run.

Bristley led Onaway with a three-run double and the grand slam giving her seven RBIs. Tamara Lupu went 2-for-2 and knocked in two. Erica Price went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Megan Estep went 1-for-2.

Rhode went 3-for-3 picking up a double while Couture, Kayla Lenard and Bev Bednarski all picked up a single.

Posen is now 14-4 overall and 10-0 in the North Star League. They host Superior Central on Friday. Onaway is now 7-5 and the Cardinals travel to Bellaire on Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Cadillac 7, Alpena 1

CADILLAC-The Alpena girls tennis team lost to Cadillac on Monday 7-1 in Big North Conference action.

Ellie Wedge at 4 singles was Alpena's only victor on the day, beating her opponent 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1.

In other singles action: Erin Wilson lost at 1 singles 6-0 and 6-0; Shae Rondeau lost at 2 singles 6-0 and 6-0 and Sydney Heise lost at 3 singles 6-1 and 6-1.

In doubles action for the Wildcats: Carlee Giordano and Katie Cook lost at 1 doubles 6-1 and 6-0; Sarah Clements and Mikayla Baarlaer lost at 2 doubles 6-0 and 6-0; Alivia Bowers and Maren Hines lost at 3 doubles 6-3 and 6-0 and Lindsey Moggie and Macy Cosbitt lost at 4 doubles 6-1 and 6-1.

Alpena plays at Traverse City West on Thursday.
