Three teens arraigned for assault

The three suspects involved in an assault at an Alpena Township residence were formally arraigned in 88th District Court on Monday. Michael Christian Bestwick, Mason Thomas Miller and David Aaron Brown have been charged with a combined 16 charges - six for Bestwick, and five each for Miller and Brown.

All three pleaded not guilty at the arraignment and have requested court-appointed attorneys. All three remain in the Alpena County Jail.

Bestwick, 19, of Alpena has been charged with a six-count warrant. Count one is assault with intent to rob while armed, a felony punishable by life or any term of years. Count two is robbery armed, a felony punishable by life or any term of years. Count three is torture, a felony punishable by life or any term of years. Count four is home invasion first degree a felony punishable by 20 years and/or $5,000. Count five is unlawful imprisonment, a felony punishable by 15 years and/or $20,000. Count six is assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder a felony punishable by 10 years or $5,000. Bond has been set at $750,000 cash or surety.

Miller, 17, of Alpena and Brown, 19, of Alpena have been charged with five-count warrants. Count one is robbery armed, a felony punishable by life or any term of years. Count two is assault with intent to rob while armed, a felony punishable by life or any term of years. Count three is home invasion first degree, a felony punishable by 20 years and/or $5,000. Count four is unlawful imprisonment, a felony punishable by 15 years and/or $20,000. Count five is assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony punishable by four years and/or $2,000. Bond for both was set at $500,000 cash or surety.

In the early morning hours of April 10 the three suspects traveled to the victim's residence in Alpena Township with the intent of robbing the victim of his medical marijuana. The suspects forcibly gained entry to the residence and upon entering the residence, one of the suspects severely beat the victim.

At the time of the incident, it was unsure if the victim would survive the injuries he suffered. The victim was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Saginaw St. Mary's Hospital. The victim is in stable condition and has been able to talk to family and will be interviewed by investigators at a later date.
