GAYLORD-The Posen girls basketball team has proven a lot this season and the Vikings proved one more thing to themselves on Tuesday.

They proved that they're ready to take on all comers in the regional play offs this year with a harsh 69-23 defeat of the Pellston Hornets in a Class D regional semifinal Tuesday at Gaylord High School.

"We played really, really well. We were really on our A-game tonight. The last few games had some shaky moments but this is the kind of basketball we really need to play if we're going to win the regionals," Posen coach Karl Momrik said.

This win brings Posen to 23-0 on the season, breaking Posen's school record for wins in a season. The Vikings face St. Ignace, another 23-0 team, on Thursday for the regional championship.

The game was really decided in the first half as Posen played nearly flawless offensively and defensively against a stunned Pellston team.

Korynn Hincka had a typically excellent night in the first quarter, hitting five field goals and playing the kind of aggressive defense that Posen opponents have feared all season.

Hincka was Posen's top scorer with 23 points.

Her cousin Jenna Hincka, a freshman, also played very consistently all night, especially defensively. She forced a lot of turn overs and was also able to pick up 12 points of her own.

"Jenna had a really great night tonight. She can play like that any game and pick up double figures for us at any time," Momrik said.

Pellston struggled in the face of such locked-in-the-groove playing from Posen, but Ainsley MacLean was able to make a couple baskets. But Posen held the Hornets scoreless for three minute stretches to end the first quarter up 21-4.

The second quarter saw Posen gain more momentum aggressively. Korynn hit another five field goals and one free throw to score a game-high 11 points for the quarter.

Korynn may have been Posen's top scorer but she wasn't doing it alone. Anna Couture, one of Posen's graduating seniors, played well by snatching rebounds and hitting four field goals in the second quarter and scored 13 points in the game.

Also key to the game was Ashley Meyers who added a few key baskets for the Vikings.

Pellston played more solidly in the second quarter, scoring 11 points. Especially important was Emma Dunham, the tall senior center who locked horns with Korynn under the basket for rebounds. She also knocked down a few field goals and free throws.

However, Posen was able to surge continually ahead and extended its lead even further with a last-second Bev Bednarski three at the buzzer to go up 56-15 at the half.

The second half started with a running clock while Posen's secondary players came on the court. The game took on a very relaxed tone in the second half. Posen no longer went on huge scoring streaks and only scored 13 points in the second half.

The Vikings were was still able to still hold Pellston to just three points in the third quarter and seven points in the fourth as the game wrapped up quickly.

Posen can now turn its attention to its second straight regional final appearance. The Vikings lost to Gaylord St. Mary last season. They'll get quite the challenege from the Saints who throttled Pickford 67-23 in the other semifinal game.

"This is a team (St. Ignace) that is synonymous with great basketball. They had some great wins and championships in class C and now they're swinging with us. It'll be our biggest challenge of the season and we're going to have to play our best basketball of the year if we're going to want a chance to win," Momrik said.
