TBAC Artists of Month announced

February 28, 2013
The Alpena News

Painter Dodi Lance and student artist Maren Winter have been selected by Thunder Bay Arts Council as the featured Artists of the Month for March.

A public reception in their honor will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the TBAC Gallery, 127 W. Chisholm.

Lance will be recognized for her lakeside painting that has been used for a scrim to welcome visitors to "ARTown." The painting was done in response to a call from TBAC to members of the Northeast Michigan Artists Guild, asking for artworks depicting summer in the Alpena area that could be used on the council's stationery or for other publicity purposes. Lance's painting was selected from among the submissions.

"Creating art in many different forms is a joy for me," said Lance. "It brings balance to the 'have-tos' of life."

Lance has been a resident of Alpena for more than 40 years. She has been interested in and involved with art most of her life. Her involvement in the Northeast Michigan Artists Guild has enhanced her ability to translate light, action and energy into art.

In addition to her lakeside painting, Lance also will have on display pieces of her artwork that include watercolor, pencil drawings and acrylics.

Winter, an eighth student at Thunder Bay Junior High School, enjoys painting, drawing and sculpting. She received an award for an abstract painting she did while attending the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this past summer. Several of her other pieces also will be on display at the open house.

In addition to art, she plays on the TBJHS eighth grade basketball team and has been dancing at the Dance Centre since she was 3 years old. She also has been in competitive dance since she was in first grade.

Art has always been a favorite hobby of hers and she is looking forward to taking specific art classes at the high school level next year. Winter spent 10 days at Blue Lakes fine Arts Camp last summer, and focused on different elements of art in the "Art Colony." Her award-winning piece from that experience is titled "Into the Blue."

Refreshments will be served at Sunday's reception. For more information about this event, contact the TBAC at 356-6678.
