ALPENA - Area voters will have a chance to get to know the five candidates who are running for municipal council in the Feb. 26 special election at a special forum sponsored by the Alpena League of Women Voters on Monday. The seats were vacated following the recall of former Councilmen Mike Nunneley and Dave Karschnick.
After the recall Mike Polluch and Susan Nielsen were appointed to sit in the seats until the special election. Besides Polluch and Nielsen, who are on the ballot and taking part in the forum, Mike Nowak, Steve Gilmore and Phil Wiser also will take part.
Nancy Hammond, who is the interim president for the League of Women Voters in Alpena, said the candidates will each have a chance to introduce themselves and make a brief statement before taking questions that will be screened by the League. Pauline Buchner will be the moderator for the forum.
"It will help the voters to learn things like what the candidates' vision is for Alpena," Hammond said. "The word seems to have been a central theme for some time and I'm sure people are going to want to know that. People can submit a question by writing it on a card and then it will be screened to be sure it isn't a duplicate or contain a personal attack and each candidate will have an opportunity to respond. It is really done to educate and inform the voting public."
The event will be held at the Alpena County Library beginning at 7 p.m. and will conclude about 8:30 p.m. Hammond said Sue Maxwell will go over the ballot language of the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Education Service District's request for a 10-year, three mill, enhancement millage. Hammond said she didn't think questions regarding the millage would be taken, due to the many informational meetings scheduled where questions can be answered.
