No jail time for former HUNT commander

February 5, 2013
The Alpena News

Del Putnam, former commander of the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team, will not spend time in jail. He was sentenced on a reduced charge of willful neglect of duty by a public officer on Monday.

As part of a plea agreement, Putnam received one-year probation and was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service. He also had to pay back the money he took - $1,200 - along with court costs and fines exceeding $1,000.

Also as part of the plea deal, Putnam resigned from the Michigan State Police and cannot be a police officer in Michigan after he surrendered his certificate.

Putnam admitted he took the money from HUNT to pay personal bills in late 2011 and early 2012.

The case was handled by Antrim County Prosecutor Charlie Koop who acted as special prosecutor in the case.
