Eighteen instrumental music students from Alpena Public Schools performed last weekend with the 2013 MSBOA District IX Junior Honors Band in Houghton Lake.
District IX includes approximately 23 school districts within a region spread between Pinconning and Alpena, including local areas such as Atlanta, Hillman and Alcona. Students are chosen for participation via audition, with selection made by the directors of MSBOA District IX.
The Honors Band weekend consisted of rehearsals on Friday evening and Saturday morning, with a Saturday afternoon concert.
The students representing Alpena this year in the Honors Band program were: Angela Salacata, first flute; Hannah Suszek, third alto saxophone; Karisa Meier, second flute; Zoe Stier, third flute; Madison Parr, sixth flute;Priya Pokorzynski, first trumpet; Shivani Akula. seventh flute; Carsen Estep, third trumpet; Bailee Thomas, first clarinet; Kaitlyn Schultz, fourth clarinet; Austin Webb, first tuba; Jane Schmanski, sixth clarinet; Jonathan Prevo, seventh clarinet; Lillian Broad, first percussion; Kaitlyn Noiles, first trombone; Alayna Nugent, second trombone; Camren DeCaire, fifth trombone; and Aaron Diamond, sixth trombone. TBJH Director Ray Reynolds expressed pride in his students who performed in this elite ensemble.
"The opportunity for students to participate in activities such as this provides for increased playing opportunities for our Alpena students and can only serve to help and enhance the primary program to allow for a well-rounded experience," Reynolds said.
