GAYLORD-The Alpena wrestling team travelled to the Northern Michigan Championship tournament in Gaylord on Saturday. They wrestled against 29 other teams and ended up coming out of it 13th with five wrestlers gaining medals.
R.J. Centala earned a third place medal a the 140 pound weight class. Dakota Patterson earned 3rd at 160.
J.D. Niergarth hit fifth place at the 171 weight class while Austin Weekes earned a 6th place medal at 189. Aleco Hantzis earned the same medal in the heavy weight championship.
The wrestling team was hampered by a flu bug that has been hitting the team hard the last few weeks, knocking out everybody but eight wrestlers.
"I think the guys that wrestled did an excellent job wrestling. We only had eight guys out there and five of them medaled which I think is impressive. We also finished in the top half of the pack. Even when the guys lost a match they came back and wrestled hard in the consolation rounds," head coach Jake Stenz said.
Alpena is hosting the individual Big North Conference this Saturday. They will wrestle against Gaylord, Petoskey, Ogemaw-Heights, Traverse City Central and Traverse City West.
They will then compete in the individual district championships on Saturday, February 9th. These matches will determine which individual wrestlers in the area will be sent to the regional championships.
