STANDISH-The Alpena boys basketball team travelled to Standish on Monday and won 62-49.
The first quarter saw Alpena up 17-14 while the half ended with the teams tied 31-31.
Alpena took charge in the third quarter by taking a 48-38 lead and kept up strong momentum in the fourth quarter to win.
"The first half saw us playing really good offense but not so good on defense. The difference in the game was when we kicked up the defense in the second half. Brad Styma was really helpful on defense in both halves and kept us going by giving us a lot of energy," Alpena coach John Pintar said.
Top scorers for Alpena included Luke Cordes with 19 points, Kam Fitzek with 14 points and Andy Marwede with 10 points. Standish's top scorer was Joe Mitrzyk with 16 points.
Alpena is now 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big North Conference. The Wildcats host a conference game against Ogemaw Heights tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Alpena's JV team also earned a victory over Standish, winning 69-38. Dylan Hoes was Alpena's top scorer with 15 points while Austin Hemmingson had 8 rebounds.
The Wildcats' freshman team lost 67-51. Top scorers for Alpena were Kolin Ghidoni with 23 points and Joe Ayala with 11.
Au Gres 28
POSEN-The Posen girls basketball team jumped out to a 16-1 first-quarter lead on Monday against Au Gres and never looked back, beating the Wolverines 54-28 in a North Star League game.
Korynn Hincka led Posen (13-0, 8-0 NSL) with 31 points and is within 30 points of tying the school record for career points. Austin Sharpe chipped in with seven points.
The Vikings' clamped down defensively on Au Gres' 6-3 center Cassidy Boensch, who was held scoreless for the first three quarters and finished with 12 points to go along with a lot of blocked shots.
Posen travels to Hillman on Wednesday for a battle between the top two teams in the North Star League.
Hillman 70, Atlanta 16
ATLANTA-Jensen Tchorzynski scored 20 points and the Hillman girls basketball team beat Atlanta 70-16 on Monday.
Alissa Jones added 15 points for the Tigers (7-4, 7-1 North Star) who led 42-4 at the half and got a chance to fine tune some things before a big matchup with Posen on Wednesday.
"We got to run some different sets and work on our zone defense," Hillman coach John Kuzewski said.
Lacey Ferguson led Atlanta (1-10, 0-7 NSL) with 11 points.
Hillman hosts Posen Wednesday in a battle of the North Star League's top two teams.
Alpena finishes eight at Mio Invite
MIO-The Alpena wrestling team finished eighth out of 13 teams on Saturday at the Mio Invitational.
The big winner for Alpena was R.J. Centala who was the champion of the 145-pound weight division.
Austin Weekes was a big contributor in the 189-weight class, earning fourth place. Felix Suszek finished third in the 215 pound weight division while Josh LaFavre was forth in that same class.
"Everybody wrestled hard and we had some good medalers, but we just came up short a few times. It was a good way to build confidence and get pumped about the quad on Wednesday," Alpena coach Jake Stenz said.
Alpena hosts a four-team Big North quad on Wednesday. Alpena and Petoskey will wrestle against Traverse City West and Traverse City Central.
