PETOSKEY-A couple of voids made the difference between a win and a loss for the Alpena wrestling team on Wednesday as the Wildcats lost 44-33 to Petoskey in a Big North Conference match.
The Wildcats voided three weight classes, giving the Northmen 18 free points, which ultimately helped them.
Winning for Alpena were: Connor Day (135) by void; Shane Trafelet (140) by pin; R.J. Centala (145) void; Dakota Patterson (171) by decision; J.D. Niergarth (189) by pin and Aleco Hantzis (heavyweight) by pin.
Alpena coach Jake Stenz was impressed with his wrestlers in the upper weight classes and said Alpena's lighter grapplers also wrestled good matches.
"They (Petoskey) have two really good wrestlers at 171 and 189 and were were able to bump up Dakota and J.D. and win those matches," Stenz said. "Our light weights came out and wrestled tough."
Alpena will wrestle in Kingsley on Saturday.
