HILLMAN - Hillman High School students have the opportunity to volunteer to assist and benefit the community during a variety of local events while boosting their college resumes. The Montmorency County Public Libraries, Hillman Wright Branch is now sponsoring a student community service group. Tina Mulka, branch librarian, said she organized the group in late November, and so far two students have signed up to volunteer.

"Students started signing up and I sent letters to local businesses asking them what events they need volunteers for. They contact me and I spread the word," she said. "It's kind of like I'm running a calendar."

Mulka said two students already helped at a Brush Creek Mill event, but she also sent notification letters to eight local businesses and organizations in Hillman.

"I keep track of the hours they volunteer for, too. We currently have two student volunteers, but I'm hoping to have 10," she said. "There was a student volunteer group at the school, but it folded. After I went to an award assembly I decided to create the community service group to help students with college applications."

Hillman High School students who are interested in volunteering to actively participate in community events can call Tina Mulka at 742-4021 for more information.

"We feel that community involvement is very important for today's youth, and hope to offer the tools to help develop strong community minded students," she said.
