ALPENA - After a year of searching for an area schools mathematics consultant, the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District has hired a candidate Superintendent Brian Wilmot said has the whole package. The AMA hired Mary Christensen-Cooper as its new math consultant.
"She will begin her assignment with AMA on April 2," Wilmot said. "We're excited to add Mary to our staff. She has potential to do what we've done with our reading programs."
Wilmot said Christensen-Cooper has the qualities the AMA and local school districts have been looking for, with degrees from Michigan State University and Regis University in Denver. He said she comes from Aurora, Colo., where she is employed by Cherry Creek School District, since 2006.
"She's articulate and passionate about math, which is a necessity," he said.
Christensen-Cooper will begin establishing relationships with staff members and school districts in April, but will continue working with staff members throughout the summer to carry out mathematics responsibilities, professional development, curricular alignment, and programs for students, administrators and teachers in the AMA ESD. She will also provide consultative services in K-12 mathematics to improve learning and test scores.
"I think she's got the whole package. She truly believes all kids can be mathematicians," Wilmot said.
