The Alpena hockey team will take the ice tonight hoping to win its second straight Big North Conference game while the Alpena boys basketball team will tip-off in its 2012-13 home opener.
The Alpena hockey team brings a 4-1 record into tonight's contest against Traverse City West. The two teams will take the ice tonight starting at 7 p.m. at Northern Lights Arena. The Wildcats won their conference opener last week against Cadillac 4-2 and enter tonight's contest as the No. 6 team in Division 3 according to rankings from the United States High School Hockey Organization (USHSHO).
Alpena coach Pete Doubek is expecting a competitive game from the Titans, who despite being just 1-4, always play tough against the Wildcats.
"Hopefully we're not going to overlook anybody. I'd like to see us come out and play as hard as we can. We're working to win. It's a good hard work ethic (from the team) and we'll see what it brings," Doubek said.
After picking up road wins against Sault and Tawas, the Alpena boys basketball team will host Traverse City Central tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Alpena High School.
The Wildcats have played well in their first two games and have had multiple players reach double figures in both games. Luke Cordes has scored more than 20 points in both games and has stepped up at key times for the Wildcats to help them start out 2-0. A win over the Trojans tonight could go a long way for Alpena if the Wildcats hope to challenge for the Big North title.
