MIO-Micah Thomey scored 17 points the Mio boys basketball team won its North Star League opener on Thursday, beating Hale 48-34 at Mio High School.
Mio jumped out to a 20-11 lead after the first quarter and led 30-21 at the half.
Ben Lubitz added 14 points for the Thunderbolts (2-0, 1-0 NSL).
Ryan Richardson and Italo Cicotti each scored six points for Hale (0-1, 0-1 NSL).
Mio only scored four points in the third quarter, but ended the final period with a flourish, outscoring the Eagles 14-8.
Mio plays at Atlanta on Monday.
Hillman 65, Atlanta 38
ATLANTA-Backed by hot shooting from beyond the arc, the Hillman boys basketball team won its North Star League opener on Thursday, beating Atlanta 65-38.
The Tigers (1-1, 1-0 NSL) hit five three-pointers in the second quarter including four by Ty Jones and led 32-17 at the half.
Jones went 4-for-4 from three-point range in the second quarter and finished with 16 points. Mason VanPamel led Hillman with 21 points, Mike Klein had 10 points and eight rebounds and Hunter Fessler added nine rebounds.
"We were physical tonight and we were a lot more aggressive," Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said. "I thought our defense tonight kind of sparked us."
Hillman led 45-29 after three quarters and outrebounded the Huskies 45-25.
Garrett Badgero led Atlanta with 17 points and Jacob Dobyn added 10 points.
Hillman plays at Arenac Eastern on Monday.
