Editorial: Hats off to our local heroes

December 6, 2012
The Alpena News

The front page of Thursday's newspaper should serve as a reminder to all of us of the sacrifice and heroic actions local safety personnel do in their jobs for the community.

First there was Alpena Township, where Tim Moggie and Lee Srebnik were honored by their peers - Moggie with a distinguished medal of honor and Srebnik as firefighter of the year.

Both men were humble in their acceptance, deflecting praise to all members of the department. Each of them reflect the qualities you would want taking care of you in a time of emergency.

Elsewhere on the page Thursday was coverage of the local Project Blue Light ceremony, an occasion each December that recognizes heroes in law enforcement and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Addressing the group was 26th Judicial Court Judge Michael Mack.

"We expect so much from police and emergency personnel," he told those gathered.

He said these safety officers have to be totally devoted to their jobs, which they are, as daily they are called upon to enter into dangerous situations. Unfortunately, "far too many leave without their life intact."

We salute all the police officers, firefighters and emergency crews serving across the region. Some are full-time, others are volunteers, but all are dedicated to the tasks they perform and committed to keeping the communities they serve safe and secure.

These folks never know when a fire may place them in harm's way, an auto accident would put their lifesaving skills to the maximum test or a routine traffic stop would suddenly turn ugly and dangerous. Regardless, they are there for us day in and day out.

Special kudos not only to Moggie and Srebnik, but police, fire and emergency crews everywhere.
