Cordes, Alpena boys win opener

SAULT STE. MARIE-Luke Cordes was one of four Alpena boys basketball players to score in double figures and the Wildcats won their 2012-13 season opener on Tuesday, defeating Sault Ste. Marie 72-65 on Tuesday.

Cordes scored 20 points, Tyler Pintar added 16, Andy Marwede chipped in with 14 and Kam Fitzek scored 11 for Alpena, who led 39-31 at the half.

Sault outscored Alpena 21-12 in the third quarter, forcing the Wildcats to make a fourth-quarter comeback. Alpena rose to the occasion, getting the ball inside to Cordes and converting free throws to outscore 21-11 over the final eight minutes.

"In the first and third quarters, we didn't play very good, but we made a nice comeback to take the lead," Alpena coach John Pintar said. "In the fourth quarter we played much better defensively and we did a better job moving the ball offensively."

Ray'Shon Anderson led Sault with 20 points.

Alpena plays Tuesday at Tawas.

Alpena's JV team won 62-34. Dylan Hoes and Eli Martin each scored 15 points.

Sault defeated Alpena's freshmen team 40-38. Brett Auger scored 16 for the Wildcats and Bradon Worth added 10.


Alpena goes 2-1 in opening weekend

The Alpena JV hockey team kicked off its season last weekend, going 2-1 in three games in West Michigan JV Hockey League play.

Reed Hamp scored a goal with less than two minutes left in regulation and Austin Girard added a goal with 26 seconds left to give Alpena a 2-0 lead in its season-opener. Parker Wedge,Alex Andrzjewski and Zac Adrian all earned assists and

Derek Van Vlerah was in net for the shutout.

The next game found Alpena up against Grand Rapids Christian. Nick Baranyai put Alpena ahead 1-0 just 46 seconds into the game and the Wildcats led 3-0 after the first period. Brandon Ciupka completed his first-ever hat trick in the second period and Alpena also got goals from, Hamp, Adrian and Chris Modrzynski. Assists went to Wedge, Ciupka and Girard. Trevor McConnell was in net for the win.

A tired Alpena squad fell behind 2-0 in the third period of its final weekend game against Manistee. Midway through the period, Modrzynski scored for the WIldcats, but Alpena ultimately fell 2-1. Van Vlerah was in net for Alpena and had another outstanding game.
