We wish Susan Nielsen and Mike Polluch well in their new roles on Alpena Municipal Council. Both will serve in that capacity until the February election, at which time they may or may not be elected by city residents to permanently serve out the terms of the vacated seats.
Both scored well in the grading system used to evaluate the candidates, and both impressed current councilmen who both interviewed and evaluated them.
This will be Nielsen's first time on council, while Polluch returns to the position he once held.
What was interesting in the selection process was the number of residents who expressed interest in the seats - 15 people applied for the two vacated seats. Earlier this week the three remaining councilmen narrowed that field to eight, before announcing their selection Thursday.
If people follow through with there stated intentions, the February election could see a significant number from this group, as well as a few others, file petitions to run.
All of which would be good. It is nice to see such interest in municipal government, which certainly is the entity whose actions most impact city residents.
