Girls on the Run celebration event slated Saturday

November 28, 2012
The Alpena News

One hundred girls, plus 30 volunteer coaches, family members and supporters will be running in celebration of Girls on the Run starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the APlex.

The noncompetitive, untimed 5K is open to the public. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

A $5 donation fee will benefit the Girls on the Run Sunrise Side scholarship fund, which ensures no girl is ever denied participation in this life-changing program due to monetary restrictions. The fund provides full and partial scholarships, and during the fall 2012 season alone awarded more than $3,310 to local participants.

The fall season began Sept. 24. Over the course of 10 weeks, the coaches taught life-skills such as handling bullies, dealing with body image, making healthy decisions and teamwork to girls in grades third through eighth. The program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced based curriculum that creatively integrates running.

"Girls on the Run has an incredible impact on the girls in our community and it wouldn't be possible without the passion of our coaches and volunteers and commitment from our local sponsors: Alpena Tri-County Zonta Club, Bay Athletic Club and District Health Department #4," said Cathy Goike, Girls on the Run Sunrise Side Council director.

Girls on the Run Sunrise Side started in spring 2010 and has served over 375 girls.

"Our plan is to significantly grow the number of program sites and communities we serve so more girls will have the opportunity to benefit from the important life skills taught by this program," said Goike.

The following program sites participated in this fall season: Besser, Ella White, Hinks, Lincoln, Sanborn and Wilson elementary schools, Thunder Bay Junior High School and Immanuel Lutheran School.

A lot of helping hands are vital to the success of any run. If you are interested in volunteering at the 5K, contact Goike at 358-7970. Anyone interested in bringing Girls on the Run to their school also may contact Goike.
