ATLANTA - The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Wednesday morning to approve Sheriff Don Edwards request to purchase two new vehicles, with millage money.
Edwards said previously in the millage proposal that a portion of the money will be used to purchase newer patrol vehicles and equipment, but the department is ready to move forward with upgrades. The millage ultimately was approved by residential voters during the August primary election, but the county will not start collecting the estimated $500,000 additional yearly revenue until January first.
"We want to order one Taurus and one Explorer. It's a new vehicle order that we would pay for in March, but they won't be here until the end of February," Edwards said.
Before approving the purchase, Commissioner Daryl Peterson questioned if the department could begin spending any of the millage funds.
"Is it legal to do this before the millage comes in," Peterson said. "I realize we have to have a jump start on this, but I want to make sure everything is legal."
Edwards said the overall process would take time, but ordering the new vehicles would not be a problem because payments would not occur until March 1.
Commissioner Bert LaFleche made the motion to purchase the 2013 Taurus from Mike Lynch for $30,475.24 and an Explorer for $29,039.24. He also said he will research a possible Northeast Michigan Council of Governments grant, which could be used to purchase a new "dog catching truck" for the department.
