After being diagnosed five years ago with pre-diabetes, Alpena native Dr. Mary Clifton was able to quickly turn it around with a plant-based diet. Encouraged by what she had experienced first-hand, she wanted to share her positive results with those she encountered through her solo internal medicine practice in Traverse City.
"I wanted to share the incredible good health and vitality I was experiencing with my patients the 2,000 people who rely on me to keep them healthy," said Clifton, a 1987 graduate of Alpena High School.
What she ultimately ended up doing was teeming up with her daughter, Dr. Chelsea Clinton, to write a 155-page book on the subject. Their efforts, "Waist Away: How to Joyfully Lose Weight and Supercharge Your Life," was published two months ago through Doctor Doctor Press.
Currently home in Alpena visiting her parents, Bob and Agnes Klemens, for the Thanksgiving holiday, Clifton will do two book signings on Friday. The first takes place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Fresh Palate, 109 N. Second, Center Building. She also plans to autograph copies of the book from 3-6 p.m. at Blue Phoenix Books, 106 N. Second.
Besides including their own personal experiences, "Waist Away" also reflects their 15 years of medical experience and cutting-edge nutritional know-how. This mother-daughter physician team believes in the philosophy that good food is always your best medicine.
Their book contains stories of their patients who lost weight and conquered chronic diseases, simply from eating a tasty, plant-based diet. Often, changing their diet ultimately enabled them to conquer chronic diseases.
The book also features special sections about staving off osteoporosis, conquering food addictions and sailing through menopause. Additionally, advice and flavorful recipes from some of the biggest names in the nutrition world are included.
Clifton received her Associate's Degree in 1989 from Alpena Community College and her medical degree from Michigan State University. Her daughter is currently doing her residency at Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York.
The book is available locally at Blue Phoenix Books and online at amazon.com. It retails for $14.95.
