In October, my wife and I flew out of Alpena headed to the West Coast to attend a conference in Physical Therapy. Our business doesn't require us to fly often. In years past we chose to fly out of Detroit due to the expense and unpredictability associated with the local air service at the time. With all the press about our new air service, we decided to do our part and fly out of Alpena, even if only once.
My first surprise came at booking. By the time I factored in travel to Detroit, parking for a week and the extra time we would need to take off work to drive there, flying out of Alpena was actually cheaper.
The flight itself could not have been better. We left work at 4 p.m. and we were in the air by 5:30. Try that in Detroit. The flight was smooth and the attendants were friendly and attentive. We made our connection in Minneapolis and arrived at our destination by 8:45 p.m. Our return trip was just as satisfying. By far, SkyWest was the best flying experience we have ever had.
To the Chamber of Commerce, local leaders, airport administration, and anyone who played a role in getting Sky West here - well done. I would encourage everyone to try flying out of Alpena at least once. I doubt you will ever fly out of Detroit again.
