Editorial: It looks like old times

November 15, 2012
The Alpena News

With a buck pole in Alpena city limits again, it looks like the days of old.

Another firearms deer season is here, thus we wish all hunters a safe and productive visit to the woods. With lots of trail cameras showing evidence of some nice-sized bucks in our region, the prospect for success should be encouraging to hunters.

In fact, when you look around and see some of the bucks shot Thursday, opening day, it is reminiscent of what a deer opener looked like years ago. Minus the feed at most of the convenience stores in our four-county region, we couldn't help but reflect back to those days when driving through Alpena and seeing a buck pole in prominent display.

In recent years you had to travel outside Alpena for buck poles but not so this year. While some will cringe at the practice, we believe it is just another aspect of our Up North culture and tradition.

Across the region this week it was nice to see the many cars parked in front of area motels, hunters in camouflage shopping for groceries and last minute lines at shops selling hunting licenses.

At the same time we couldn't help but smile at barber shops, and others, with "closed for hunting" signs posted in their windows.

When area schools close their doors to allow students time for the woods, one knows this is more than mere sport, it's a passion and way of life.

For our out-of-town guests, we wish you a pleasant trip and best of luck.

For everyone, please be safe out there.
