ACC to offer 1 year certificate program

November 15, 2012
Emily Siegmon - News Staff Writer , The Alpena News

ALPENA - Alpena Community College will be offering a one year industrial technology certificate program designed to meet Iosco County employers needs. Nancy Seguin, interim director of ACC Huron Shores Campus and associate vice president, said ACC is on the cusp of something good and is answering the call for skilled entry level employees.

"Employers are looking for quality employees ... We configured a basic curriculum to give students overall knowledge for employment for industry and manufacturing," Seguin said.

According to Seguin, program courses will include basic knowledge of electricity, safety, blueprint reading, math, and computer skills.

President Olin Joynton said the certificate program is rapidly developing and well marketed, and the industrial skills certificate for Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport businesses will be offered on the Huron Shores Campus and in the welding lab at Oscoda High School.

"ACC is really stepping up to the plate," Seguin said. "If this takes off and is our avenue to increase enrollment and make enough money, I'd like to hire another full-time instructor."

Seguin is expecting at least 20 students to participate in the spring 2013 program, which will begin Jan. 14 and will run until May 8, 2013. She said approximately 60 students from ACC, Alcona, and Oscoda already showed interest in the program while participating in a tour of local facilities and employers in Iosco County that are in need of skilled workers to fill positions.

"Students can get the training they need from ACC in just a year and will have the opportunity to land a successful career with local employers such as Kalitta Air, Phoenix Composite Solutions, P&L Development & Manufacturing," Seguin said.

Industrial technology classes designed for dual enrolled and college students will begin January 2013 with courses offered at Oscoda High School and at ACC's Huron Shores Campus. For more information call Seguin at 358-7212 or email seguin@alpenacc.edu.
