For several years, the country, state, and the county of Alpena have celebrated Adoption Day. It is always the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and this year it is November 20, 2012. Adoption Day is near Thanksgiving and it is very appropriate. Certainly, we give thanks for adoption being available for so many children and adopting parents to become permanent families. As a society, we, too, have been thankful that adoption exists.
For me personally, granting an adoption is by far the best part of my job. Often times adoption results from the abuse and neglect of a child that has been so severe that termination of their natural parent's rights is the right thing to do. When natural parent's rights are terminated the child is "freed" for adoption. The child, indeed, is also freed from the abuse or neglect that has plagued their life so far. Too, although the foster parents are usually very wonderful, a child is not to be raised in foster care.
To celebrate Adoption Day the good citizens of Alpena County are invited to join us in Family Court on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. as I am honored to approve several adoptions. After 4 p.m. the public is also invited to celebrate adoption at the Alpena Alcona Montmorency Educational Service District Conference Facility.
